Shekhawati Region
Often called the 'Open air Art Gallery of Rajasthan' the region of medieval
Shekhawati comprises the present day district of Sikar and Jhunjhunu. The
high quality frescoes which this region is famous for date between 1750 and
1930.

The origins of Shekhawati go back to the Rajput Rao Shekha who founded the
Kingdom of Shekhawati (Garden of Shekha ), an important connotation in this
sun-swept semi-desert scrub region. The forts and wells built by the Rajputs
, patronized arts and encouraged trade. Though many of these embellishments
are fading, they offer fascinating insights into the skills and creative
imagination of the artists who worked and painted on the walls, lintels ,
ceilings , niches and every conceivable corner. Apart from the havelis, even
temples, chattris (memorials) were embellished with paintings. Themes of the
paintings were generally sought from legends, religious epics, historical
events, everyday life, floral inventions and western influences.
The Shekhawati Express (# 9733) runs daily between Delhi and Jaipur 2310 /
0550 at Jhunjhunu
